Places To See

Tsuglagkhang
The Tsuglagkhang complex collectively refers to several buildings connected to the Dalai Lama and Buddhism. The complex hosts the photrang or the official residence of the Dalai Lama in India. Besides, it also houses the Tibet Museum, Kalchakra Temple, Namgyal Gompa, and the Tsuglagkhang itself.

Tsuglagkhang shrine
The shrine is dedicated to the Tibetan deity of compassion, Tsuglagkhang. The structure houses a 3m-high gilded statue of the Sakyamuni Buddha. Thee statues of Avalokitesvara and Padmasambhava, who introduced Buddhism in Tibet can be seen here. Several relics rescued from the Jokhang Temple in Lhasa during the Cultural Revolution can also be found here.

Kalachakra Temple
The temple was built in 1992. It houses an interesting collection of murals of the Kalachakra (Wheel of Time) mandala. These murals are believed to be linked to Avalokitesvara, of whom the Dalai Lama is a manifestation. Every year, on the fifth day of the third Tibetan month, sand mandalas are created here.
Tip: Photography is strictly banned in the Kalachakra Temple. In fact items like cameras, mobile phones, cigarettes and lighters are not permitted within the temple.

Namgyal Gompa
The remaining buildings within the Tsuglagkhang complex collectively form the Namgyal Gompa. Here you can see the monks meditate and debate. You can also take clockwise kora (ritual circuit) of the outer Tsuglagkhang complex.

Bhagsu
This scenic village is home to the ancient Bhagsunag Temple. There is a pool here with a tiger head that sprouts water from the streams making their way from the mountains. The water is considered to be sacred by the Hindus and you will see visitors collecting the water in bottles to take back home.
